The UAE stands out as an exception among the Gulf countries, as it shifted towards a Saturday-Sunday weekend from 1 January 2022. Abu Dhabi's Emirate move was intended to provide a foundation of improved global economic and business sector competitiveness in the country and align with global standards, according to a 7 December 2021 release from Abu Dhabi's Government Media Office.

Countries That Changed Their Weekend

The January 2022 decision for the UAE to follow a Saturday-Sunday weekend, along with a 6 April 2026 directive in Nepal, was not unprecedented. Changes to weekend flows necessarily impact financial transfer points, but they also align to trade and economic goals - and they redefine typical schedules for individuals, families, and workplaces.

On 1 January 2022, the UAE's federal holiday introduced a new weekend on Saturdayand Sunday, all through the federal government offices. Their mandate left Friday open as a half working day. Other country developments vary by region or sector, as the Nepal example showed for its banking and finance verticals only.

What Travelers and People Wiring Money Need to Check

Travelers and remote workers need to know their peers' vacation schedules when sending emails or setting global meetings. With isolated foreign holidays, the odd workday becomes the weekend - and that can impact not only personal work trips, but contractual transactions and travel requests. For example, Egypt's and Iraq's Friday-Saturday weekends coincide, based on Islam's Friday Sabbath. In Israel their extended one is Friday and Saturday, often requiring time-sensitive work or move deadlines to Thursday, since both Friday and Saturday are official weekend holidays. The UAE modified federal offices' calendar to a Saturday and Sunday weekend, while Nepal's government and banking criteria for weekend holidays reflect the simply "Saturday" rule.
