Criminal Court Sentenced 13 Years in Jail to Maldives Former President
The Maldives Criminal Court sentenced thirty-year jail to former president Mohamed Nasheed after founding guilty of a terrorism charge.
The three-judge bench had issued arrest warrant of Nasheed after taking the unanimously decision as accused of ordering to take into custody chief judge in January 2012, when he was leader of the Indian Ocean island nation.
Judge Abdulla Didi declared in ruling late night, “Nasheed is found guilty of arresting and illegally detaining judge Abdulla Mohamed,” The former president was arrested close to capital Male and took to Dhoonidhoo prison.
However, Nasheed refused to accept allegations and their supporters believe that it is doing to him just at eliminating as a contender against current President Yameen Abdul Gayoom in the 2018 presidential election.
“President Nasheed was repeatedly denied legal representation, denied the right to appeal, his defense witnesses were prevented from taking the stand, and prosecution witnesses were routinely coached by the judges and the police..”, his office issued a statement on Friday.
Nasheed told to media that judiciary of Maldives is full of humiliation and corruption and bribery is being paid Judges to judges to fulfill their demands.
He also said that judges are selling their judgment without feeling the any kind of fear, their injustice preventing the development of the nation and also bad for people.
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) also strictly condemned and protesting against the wrong ruling of criminal court. Spokeswoman for MDP, Miss Shauna Aminath told media while criticizing the court verdict as said the 13 March when court declared thirty-year prison to Nasheed, comes out bad day for nation.
The decision emerged after four-day Nasheed’s lawyers resign while protesting against the unfair trial, just destroying his political career.
