Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak Will Be Retried On Embezzlement Case
Egyptian ex-president will be retried in the only case of corruption that kept him in custody at the hospital. A decision that comes after the decision of the Supreme Court to annul the previous sentence of three years in prison.
After canceling his sentence to three years in prison, an Egyptian court ordered the Tuesday, January 13 for a new trial of former President Hosni Mubarak, in a case of embezzlement. A step that could be one of the last steps before his possible release.
Mubarak, detained in a military hospital in Cairo, was sentenced in May to three years in prison for corruption. He had misappropriated funds that had been used to renovate a family residence.
According to judicial sources, a new trial in this case could allow Hosni Mubarak, 86, to find freedom if the first sentence is not confirmed. For now, it was not clear if he would remain in custody for the new trial.
In November, a court had already given up on appeal murder charges of hundreds of demonstrators who had brought him to life imprisonment in the first instance. The former Rais however remained in custody in a Cairo military hospital under trial for corruption.
Mubarak resigned in February 2011 after a popular uprising after 30 years in power.
