European Parliament Support The Recognition Of The Palestinian State
After initiatives in Britain, France, Ireland or Spain, the European Parliament, in turn, said Wednesday in a resolution its “support” for the recognition of a Palestinian state.
The European Parliament said, Wednesday, December 17, his support for the recognition of a Palestinian state in a compromise resolution promoted by the main parties of the left and right, the Christian Democrats to the neo-communists. The text was adopted by 498 votes in favor, 88 against and 11 abstentions.
Launched at the initiative of the Social Democrats, the original resolution, which called on Member States to recognize the Palestinian state without putting a condition, has evolved into a more neutral formula that has received support from the European People’s Party (EPP), the first group and main right training in Strasbourg.
The European Parliament supports the principle of recognition of the Palestinian State and the two-state solution and said that this should go hand in hand with the revival of peace talks,” said the resolution.
The European Parliament joins similar initiatives in Britain, in France , Ireland or Spain. In Madrid, parliamentarians, however, conditioned the recognition of Palestine to the emergence of a negotiated settlement with Israel.
The approach adopted by the European Parliament has allowed different groups to join, the EPP are seeing a confirmation of its previous positions.
The resolution points out that the elements of the solution are known: the creation of a Palestinian state, peaceful coexistence of two states based on the 1967 borders, Jerusalem as capital of both states, and ensuring stability and Israel’s security, said Michèle Alliot-Marie, French MEP UMP member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs.
