Egyptian Ex-President Morsi Sentenced To Death Over Jailbreak
Cairo: Islamist leader and former President Mohammad Morsi has been sentenced to death by Cairo court over mass jail break in 2011.
International media reported that a court Cairo court has announced death sentence to the Egyptian ex-President Mohammad Morsi and more than hundred others on Saturday convicting them for the mass prison break of 2011 to free Islamist brotherhood leaders and supporters.
The Islamist Mohammad Morsi had already been sentenced to 20 years in jail for ordering the arrest and torture to protesters, deposed in July 2013 during huge street protests against his rule serving jail since.
Judge Shaaban el-Shami announced the death sentence for Mr Morsi at a court in Cairo accused him of plotting raids on various jails along with foreign militants and supporter to free Islamist Brotherhood and affiliates in 2011.
Morsi supporter described the death sentence farcical saying that it was truly political decision and judiciary has been used to legitimize the coup against former President.
Egypt’s grand mufti, a high religious cleric, will now considering the decision for ratification on the request of judge and will make opinion before the sentence can be carried out, however, if religious authorities agreed with Judiciary the offender has right to appeal against the sentence in court.
According to foreign media Mohammad Morsi further faces the charges passing state secrets to foreign militant groups including Hamas and Lebanon’s Hezbollah; earlier Egypt court has recommended death sentences to other 16 defendants in the case while Morsi’s involvement verdict will be passed in June.
Muslim Brotherhood leaders and affiliates have faced numerous charges relating to killing and torturing of anti-government protesters during rule of Mohammad Morsi, most of them have announced death penalty by court.
